In the era of smart Internet of Things (IoT), interactions among physical objects become a reality thanks to the advances in communication technologies, information processing, embedded computing, and smart devices. In smart IoT, objects are equipped with ubiquitous intelligence so that everything can be connected together anywhere and anytime. This motivates new revolutions in many fields in retail, marketing, logistics, agriculture, transportation, healthcare, infrastructure monitoring, environmental surveillance, urban planning, etc., to improve people's life quality. The resultant novel intelligent services introduce many new challenges. Identification, organization, and communication of things/smart devices need to be investigated. Collection, fusion, management, and analysis of big IoT data are to be studied as well.
Considering the popularity of smart devices, mobile information systems specifically designed for smart IoT are highly expected. Intelligent technologies such as genetic algorithms and ant colony optimization should be further customized for smart IoT to enhance system performance and predict event occurrence. Meanwhile, energy efficiency is another primary concern which should be always considered. As many smart IoT applications involve sensitive information, user privacy and system security become indispensable research issues. To promote smart IoT, many open issues are to be addressed so that heterogeneous things/smart devices can be seamlessly connected.
